The moment the talk starts about implementing Agile approaches in an organisation, a debate brews between business analysts and project managers. The set of methods demands these two prime professionals, whose work is usually based on the phases of a project.

However, where really does a project manager with an Agile certification fit within this atmosphere? To get the hang of this, we first have to understand the job roles the approach asks for. Each role has a specific title and defined responsibilities.

Here are the terms commonly used by the project management fraternity:

  • The Team:

In a project, a team is a group of professionals who are involved in the delivery of a product as per the client’s needs. This group will have people with the required skills of analysis, design, development, testing, and of course, the user experience.

It is good to remember that there is actually no role properly defined within a team, which, again, is intentional. The motive is to bring about cross functionality rather than a troop of collective talents.

  • The Stakeholders

Anybody who influences or is influenced by the project is a stakeholder. They are generally the end users who enjoy the resulting product of the projects. They are the one who purchase the product, and hence, determine its quality indirectly.

  • The Product Owner:

He is the one for whom the team works. He is the decision maker about the product that’s going to be the outcome of his project. His ideas, thus, bespeak the views of the business. Think of him as a ready information resource about the features of the product and about every propriety decision.

  • The Scrum Master:

Let’s call him the coach who has an Agile Expert Certification. He is the one who facilitates and guides the team with the techniques and best practices of the approach. This person enables group discussions within the team and assists in understanding how the methods can be continuously improved.

So, where does the project manager fit amidst all these?

The answer lies in the type of project and also on the type of role the project manager is entitled to. For instance, say this professional’s job role demands him to work in close association with the team (technically known as servant leadership). This will involve training more than informing, and assisting more than commanding.

As such, the professional can take up the Agile expert certification in Dubai and become the Scrum Master – the coach! The accreditation will help him further to get an insight into the values of the approach, its principles and methods.

Yet again, if his job role is more about focusing on the goals of the project, or the scope of the product and what the business wants it to be, a project manager can turn into the product owner instead! This would be helpful in cases where the clients and sponsors are not easily available.

Of course, to adapt himself to his designation and do justice to it, a project manager has to polish his analytical brain first. A business analyst-turned-project manager suits this role best.

Yet again, a professional may opt for an agile expert certification in Abu Dhabi if he has shifted gears from project development and testing to project management. The certification is a golden opportunity to deploy his technical skills within the team for the sake of the project.
