If you have ever played rugby, you will know what the talk is about. Although the roles of a Scrum Master and a Project Manager are often mixed, they are highly specific and way different from each other. While there’s a very thin line that defines ‘who does what,’ the former should not be mixed with the latter.

Here’s why:

The Project Manager, by convention, is a leader. He is into decision making, planning, and managing projects. He is the one who leads a team as well. Therefore, he is in charge of meeting project goals and accomplishing objectives.

But, the Scrum Master is more of a coach. He is into facilitation rather than leading. He is the bridge between a project and its clients. He is not liable to managing the working team. Instead, he is supposed to train it and back the Product Owner.

In a nutshell, this professional is responsible for the correct implementation of the Scrum procedure and making sure that it runs continuously, imparting maximum benefit.

How is his job role different from a Product Owner?

Product Owners are concerned only about their project for which, they are liable to managing a product backlog. However, changes are likely to be in demand anytime with growing customer needs and market trends.

Accordingly, the Product Owners have to fine tune the backlog to fit all the changes and push the project forward. This is a very intricate task which cannot be carried out in the absence of a Scrum Master. Thus, a person, who has undergone a certified Scrum Master training, is capable of taking up a consultancy role and coach Product Owners.

Despite the fact that the latter holds the possession of the project and makes all relevant decisions, he still has to look up to this accredited professional to find help regarding user experience, product functionality, feedback from customers, and changes if required.

To make the long story short, a Scrum Master helps a Product Owner understand how to manage his product development team, use the backlog, and plan meetings accordingly.

Coping with the transition:

Because the profession branches out of project management, conventional Project Managers often have to struggle with the designation. And, this is never trivial because their decisions can make or break matters. Sometimes, projects aren’t even completely defined at their starting.

However, because agile process management is gradually becoming part and parcel of all projects, there’s no room from shying away from such roles. As such, every organisation is looking for Scrum Masters who are certified and trustful.
